5 Quick Nutritional Tips for a Healthier Body

Nutrition is the most important factor when it comes to transforming your body and for many it’s also the most confusing piece of the puzzle! We live in an information age where as Dax Moy puts it “We’re thirsty for knowledge and drowning in information!”. Here’s a few quick tips that’ll make a major difference to the way you look and feel….

1. Eat like a caveman or cavewoman! If you can’t kill it, grow it or pick it you probably shouldn’t eat it. A massive proportion of the foods we eat are processed and were never meant to be put in the human body! Stick to meats, fish, vegetables, fruits and nuts. And tough as it may be try to avoid alcohol, dairy, grains and refined sugar! Try your best to eat 100% organic.

2. Eat a good healthy breakfast! We’ve been told it since we were kids and for good reason. Studies have shown that those who eat a bigger breakfast actually burn more calories than those who eat a smaller portion or skip breakfast altogether. When you skip breakfast you’ll undoubtedly become tired much earlier when your brain and body run low on fuel. Ideally you should look to combine a complex (slow digesting) carbohydrate like oatmeal or bran with a clean protein like eggs or a protein shake. Add some coffee and a glass of ice cold water and your ready for the day!

3. The importance of water cannot be overstated. A massive 60% of our bodiys are made up of water and while we can live without food for anywhere up to a month, without water we wouldn’t last a week. A loss of water even as low as 2% of our bodyweight can severely compromise our physical and mental performance. Caffeine, alcohol and even some sports drinks can further lead to dehydration. For this reason proper hydration is essential, especially for those partaking in strenuous physical activity. We should all aim to take in an absolute minimum of 2 litres of water a day and anywhere up to 4-5 litres depending on bodyweight, humidity and activity.

4. Eat A Post Workout meal! Second to breakfast, your post workout meal following an intense workout is probably the most important meal of the day. A meal consisting of fast digesting carbohydrates and proteins taken immediately after training will help replenish depleted glycogen stores and repair and rebuild damaged muscle tissue. A banana and whey protein shake make for a great easy post workout meal.

5. Ditch the Energy Drinks! Eye popping logos and genius marketing attract us to these energy drinks which are loaded with sugar and caffeine. These drinks bring with them a quick sugar rush which is inevitably followed by a crash in energy levels not long after leaving us feeling tired and unmotivated. Hormonal releases caused by these sugar rushes lead to unwanted weight gain in time.
