Would an Undergraduate take general courses if she wants to major in nutrition?

I might want to major in Nutrition and get a RD license, and was wondering if I would still take general courses during the first two years of college, and then decide on whether or not I want to major in Nutrition. Or would I have to decide in the first year since I would have to take classes for that major?

Pretty much everyone takes general education courses, if they are working towards a bachelors degree.

Start by reading the Occupational Outlook Handbook article for dieticians and nutritionists.

Then find some colleges that offer a program in this field and read up on the college websites about the required courses. Sometimes you can find the courses listed on the department webpages. Other times you need to look in the college catalog (online or print copy)

Once you’ve been accepted to a college you can make an appointment with an academic counselor and/or someone from the Dietetics/Nutrition program can advise you. Most likely, you can begin college taking general coursework (english, history, biology, chemistry, etc) and also take 1 or 2 introductory courses in nutrition. Then you’ll be better able to decide on a future course of study.
